Host families have specialised operations in grain farming and cattle production. We also feature placements in dairy, sheep and other agriculture sectors. Much of the grain and large scale operations begin in March and end by September, a number have work year round. Our specialist Custom Harvest programme is an option whereby you travel around the country following the harvest. Excellent machinery experience is required and be prepared for long hours at peak times. Beef cattle are usually kept together with crops. Calving takes place during the months of February, March and April. After calving and branding, the cattle are turned out to summer pasture. Work also involves hay-making, fencing, irrigation and general maintenance. Dairy farms range in size and grow crops such as maize, hay and silage. Calving takes place all year round. Cropping farms range in size from the small to very large, with a wide range of crops grown. We also feature placements in dairy, sheep and other agricultural sectors, which offer a wide range of farming activities. A limited number of cropping farms keep pigs, sheep and/or horses.
The placement opportunities in horticulture are wide and varied in the USA and range from turf production to herb and citrus fruit production. There are also a number of placements within the wine industry in the USA. Many of these are specialised areas, with only a few placements available. Accommodation will vary dependent on your placement, it will range from staying with a family to bunkhouse accommodation.
There are a small number of agricultural placements that have an element of horse work connected with them. Some equine placements are available within the equestrian and thoroughbred sectors.
