Placements are made in the Gunma Prefecture located 100 kilometres north of Tokyo.

For a different experience – try Japan – you will be made so welcome and see agriculture and horticulture in a totally different setting. Work with dairy, pigs and beef and learn about their major crop – rice. Horticultural opportunities include greenhouses, vegetables, nurseries and flowers. Placements are made within the Gunma area, 100 km north of Tokyo. On arrival all Trainees will have a 10 day introduction seminar, to help with language and cultural understanding. Agriculture

Trainees work on pig, dairy or beef farms. Farms in Gunma are very intensive with the farm size between 1– 20ha. Dairy farms have between 50-200 cows. They may have a small area of forage crops like maize. Pastures can only be found in the mountain areas.

Pig farm placements are also available with 300– 400 sows in modern buildings. These are usually on farms with no land, just the farm buildings. Beef farms have around 200 – 300 head of cattle with some cropping. They are usually kept in semi-closed feedlots or inside. Crop production is mostly rice, barley and vegetables.

Agricultural placements vary from average size properties to large scale and custom harvesting opportunities. Crops include wheat, barley, oats, canola, beans, lupins, just to name a few.

Horticulture

Placements are on enterprises growing cucumbers, plant nurseries in greenhouses, apple orchards or enterprises growing mixed vegetables.
