AgriVenture - Different placement types
Agriculture

The dairy industry has by far the greatest number of placements for all levels of experience. Farm sizes vary from the small owner operator to corporate ‘high tech’ farms. Cows are grazed outside all year which offers a wide variety of tasks. Calving begins in July or August and by timing your arrival for these months you will gain the best understanding of the seasonal dairy farming system.

Most cropping placements are in the South Island. Crops include cereals and ryegrasses to a wide variety of specialist small seeds. Farms range in size with a large percentage of farms under irrigation. Many cropping farms also include livestock so you may be tractor driving one day and in the shearing shed the next. Tractor and machinery operation experience is generally required for these placements.

Many sheep and beef placements are incorporated with cropping positions. All stock are kept and fed on pasture outside year round. Lambing takes place from July to October while calving is mostly around September. There are many seasonal tasks involving stock (such as drenching, shearing, drafting, and lambing) with the majority of the work outside.

Specialised placements in equine, pigs and deer are available in a number of positions each year.
Horticulture

The majority of horticulture placements are on orchards although there are a number of flower, vegetable, kiwifruit and viticulture placements.

Harvest seasons vary according to the type of crop grown. For example asparagus is harvested from October, stone fruit from December and kiwifruit from April.

Accommodation will vary dependent on your placement, it will range from staying with a family to bunkhouse accommodation.
Agri-mix and Hort-mix

These placements offer a mixture of outside and inside work. Your function will be to help on the property and in the family home.
